The Causes and Impacts of Data Breaches

Over the past two decades an increasing amount of incredibly sensistive information has been moved to digital formats. As this move has taken place said information has come to rest in the hands of a multitude of different entities that have not taken the proper steps to ensure the security of that information. The result is the unauthorized disclosure of information which incurs significant fiscal and social risk to the subjects of the stored information. Since the AOL breach in 2004 the frequency and size of these data breaches has been growing each year with higher losses and interestingly enough similar causes. Many often worry about the biggest data breaches such as Yahoo or Ebay but what is often overlooked is exactly what information is lost.
